Haxey v BARTON TOWN CRICKET CLUB Barton Town (Sunday) on Sun 14 Jun 2009 at 14.00
BARTON TOWN CRICKET CLUB Lost by 92 runs
Match report
There were three good reasons to bat first today:
• It was the hottest day of the year so far
• Setting a target there would be no trigger point for Chin Perera to come off his long run up
• I don’t recall the third –it could have been something about being finished in time to catch England v India.
Obviously such a crucial toss was vital to win and I will be attending tossing practice on Tuesday evening because I didn’t.
Barton started well and Billy was soon on the scorecard. That was in the fifth over. The next wicket didn’t fall until the 34th over, 173 runs later. Significant achievements were that neither batsmen made a ton (we are becoming specialists at denying batsmen in their nineties) and that multi-talented Haxey pro Perera didn’t get to bat (maybe I should be reinventing myself as a slow bowler – the amount of spin I put into these reports!) Whirlwind Wright eventually rediscovered his groove in a second spell of 4-29 to complete his 5-for.
Barton’s batting response was determined, both Austins (Tracy 20 and Steve 38) got starts and Scott Meffen doggedly held up an end in two partnerships totalling 50. Wickets then tumbled regularly with Barton finally falling well short.
Highlight of our Innings was Dilshan Barnes’ cheeky paddle sweep off Perera straight down short fine leg’s throat. Umpire, Nigel ‘Scoop’ Fisher called this one of the funniest things he has seen on a cricket field. Check http://lincscricketlatest.blogspot.com to see how a proper journo would write it up. We may not be competing for honours this season but we are collecting numerous umpire accolades. The Fisher award can be added to Jack Bowers’ (harsh) claim that our performance against Brigg last week was one of the worst he has ever seen. Have you forgotten all those hazy Epworth Sundays already Jack?
Here comes the Southgate bit – big effort all round and everybody gave of their best (I should say nearly everybody – the person who let me down the most knows who they are) but we were ouplayed by a stronger side. A season in league two is clearly not going to be the easy ride we were expecting. We cannot afford to come back from Luddington empty-handed.
