Luddington v BARTON TOWN CRICKET CLUB Barton Town (Sunday) on Sun 21 Jun 2009 at 14.00
Match was Tied 1 point each

Match report Good game, good game!

We all enjoy a trip to Luddington – if you ever need to find out how to get there there’s a map in most dictionaries. Just look up ‘the sticks’. For a change it wasn’t an important toss to win. So I did. ‘We’ll have a bat’ says I. At 76 for 7 I was beginning to suspect this was not the wisest of choices. If anyone wants to see the procession of wickets, most of the dismissals will be on my Christmas DVD ‘Cricket’s silliest shots.’ Only Elliot offered any resistance in the first half of the order with 17.

Anyhoo, worry ye not, this brought together veteran all-rounder, Marc Foster (it’s OK, he won’t be reading this – he’s on his way to Lithuania!?) and reluctant willow-wafter Tom Palin. Cue a savage onslaught on Ludd’s weary bowlers (it was double drinks weather) resulting in an 8th wicket partnership of 72. When TP fell for 35, Foz was ably supported on his way to a magnificent 63 by Nathan Jones (24) who finally fell LBW to the last ball of the innings. Barton had posted an imposing and perhaps surprising 198 all out.

For a change the pack was awash with bowling talent. At times it was shuffled like a Twenty20 side with micro-spells and end changes. Elliot (mostly spin this week) bagged 4 wickets and Foz banished his 3rd team demons with a trio. Jones and Wright were both at times unplayable. The only disappointment was Tom Palin who suffered early on going for 26 runs off 3 overs (but this lad is made of sterner stuff and will bounce back in the season no doubt). It’s ever so easy to do Tom’s write up – just cut and paste from the Saturday script!

Luddington were soon staring down the barrel as the required rate ascended towards double figures. Skipper Clarke top-scored with 60 but it looked all over until seasoned performers Geoff Smith (I’m sure he’s eligible for Lincs over 60s next year) and Steve Proctor nurdled and chipped a 9th wicket partnership of 56. Smith was particularly canny inventing a sort of semi-Dilshan flip (A Dilshan’t if you will.)

And so to the chase we cut: final over Foster to bowl 5 runs needed. First ball single; second ball streaky four, scores level; third ball batsman, Currie, (there’s one we didn’t get!) spears the ball into the ground, it screws to rest a yard behind the stumps, Smith shouts for a single, Genney pounces on the ball and belly flops through the stumps. OUT! Ludd too had posted an imposing and perhaps surprising 198 all out.

The result – a perfect tie. Both teams all out with a mere 3 balls out of 480 unused. At 76/7 we looked dead and buried, for much of Ludd’s innings we looked odds-on favourites. All-in-all a point each was a fitting outcome for what had been an excellent game of cricket.
