BARTON TOWN CRICKET CLUB Barton Vikings v Grimsby on Sun 14 Jun 2009 at 14.00
BARTON TOWN CRICKET CLUB Won by 3 wickets
Match report
This was an important game for the Vikings to win; and win the Vikings did.
A strong Grimsby side turned up at Barton probably expecting to win easily. Had they forgotten those dark days of Mellors' 201 not out? Maybe not, as Captain Rob Smith decided to bat first. Despite knocking the cover off the ball he decided not to walk when given out off the bowling of Cressey. That did nothing but spur the Vikings on and despite some resistence by wicket keeper/bat Crossley (35), only Freeman looked dangerous (17) and Grimsby were all out for 99 in the 34th over.
Unfortunately Captain Jeremy Evans injured his hand when being struck at silly mid-off and had the further indignency of seeing Cressey not even attempt to catch the rebound off his right wrist. Now Welshmen, you must understand, are made of stern stuff sadly this Welshman is not and despite ice, and I mean ice, there was no prospect of Evans batting.
That should not have been a problem however the batting performance of the Vikings was dismall. Cressey (4) Graves (4) Brunwin (who at the moment doesnt look as though he can hold a cricket bat let alone use it - 0) and Waller (the space cowboy who has managed very few runs this season - 1) all disappointed.
With the score at 20 for 5 the Vikings looked in trouble, enter Mellors who batted superbly for 43 not out, spurred on by some ridiculous and frankly immature at sledging by the wicket keeper Crossley. If he had only realised that by not annoying Mellors Grimsby would have probably won this game he may have thought best before taking Mellors on. An excellent batting performance by Nathan Jones (21 not out) who has threatened to become a batsman for a number of years now was the icing on the cake for a Barton performance that at one stage looked like resulting in a third consecutive defeat. The big question is if the Vikings required one run to win, would Evans have braved further injury and gone into bat? The answer is NO!
A word for the Vikings fielding side, which saw an excellent performance by Bainborough and Hodgson. A moment for the Captain to forget was when he berrated Shreeve and Waller for failure to execute a run out only to be faced with a similar scenario only 3 overs later, managing to throw the ball in to the wicket keeper at a speed of approx 1mph (please note the average human being walks at a speed of 3 mph!) The captain makes no apologies however for expecting a high standard from his team in all three disciplines of the game. There are clearly areas that are needed to be worked on and hopefully that will come as the season progresses. Make no mistake about it, this was an important victory with good bowling performances from Hodgson and Nathan Jones. Unfortunately the plaudits must go out to - Man of Match Mellors (soon to replace our resident pro Cressey) who bagged himself 6 wickets in the destruction of the Grimsby batters.
A rest for a few weeks means that the Vikings will next play Bottesford in a month that only presents this fixture until a full fixture list at the back end of the season.
Once again the Club were pleased to see a huge support (mainly from the Jones and Hodgson travelling barmy "Barton" army) It would be nice to see this level of support shown to the youngsters at all home matches.
With five league victories the Vikings have an opportunity of fullfilling a promising start to the season.
