The first two weeks of the season has seen all three of our Junior sides in action with a Win for our Under 13’s away at App Frod and a spirited fight by the Under 11’s against a strong Grimsby Town the highlights of the opening games
Under 11’s
Barton Town 41/6 ( Nett 193) Lost to Grimsby Town 112/7 (Nett 256)
A young and very inexperienced side under the Captaincy of Lily Andrew battled very well against a strong Grimsby Town outfit . An excellent 7 wickets were taken against some good strong batting with wickets shared amongst Harvey 2 for 9 , Lily 2 for 18 including a caught and bowled , Henry 1 for 9 and “Golden Arm” Finners 1 for 10 . Debutant Megan also claimed her 1st Vikings wicket with 1 for 18 . In reply we batted with courage and good technique against some good pace bowling . Top score from Harvey with 10 not out including 2 boundaries, with Fin Y and Thomas chipping in with 4 apiece . It may have been a defeat but it was undoubtedly a very encouraging performance from our youngsters . Our 2nd game away at Louth unfortunately fell victim to the weather
Under 13’s
Barton Town 64 for 5 ( Nett 224 ) Lost to Broughton 81 for 4 (Nett 249)
Led again this season by now “Veteran” Beno our near neighbours Broughton provided our 1st opposition of the season and we had yet another good battle . A few too many extra’s and some determined batting helped Broughton make 249 with wickets for Beno 2 for 14 , “ Blonde Bombshell” Lily 1 for 15 and experienced seamer Lucas 1 for 15 . Against some good bowling we never really threatened the win and top scores came from Beno 9 not out and Will with 5 not out
Barton Town 92 for 5 (Nett 252) Beat App Frod 90 for 8 (Nett 226)
An entertaining game at Brumby Hall saw a rare clash between the two clubs in recent times . Some powerful stoke play saw us hit 8 boundaries in our innings with 2 apiece for Beno 15 not out , Opening batsman Theo 10 not out , Will 9 not out and big hitting Spence 9 . Despite 32 not out from home batsman H Goggon we took 8 wickets to see us home for the win . Great bowling by all the team with the wickets taken by Will with 2 for 13 , Theo 1 for 6 , Lucas 1 for 10 and Lily 1 for 15 . Captain Beno finished with the impressive figures of 3 for 2 from 3 overs whilst Lucas took an excellent catch in addition to his bowling.
Barton Town 87 for 9 (Nett 215) Lost to Outcasts 47 for 3 (Nett 223)
Too many wickets lost and some crazy run outs saw us slip to defeat when Outcasts visited Marsh Lane . Outcasts showed excellent defence of their wickets , only losing 3 to set us a more than achievable 223 .However in stark contrast 9 Barton wickets were lost which saw us with too much to do to claim the win . Only Beno 1 for 2 from 3 overs and Theo 1 for 3 from his 3 overs got through the opposition, however Alex S claimed a superb run out . Lucas and Lily also bowled very tightly conceding only 4 runs between them in 4 overs . Some positive cricket from all our players kept getting pegged back by the regular fall of wickets and going into the last pair a positive of 36 runs were needed for victory . What followed was some brilliant , entertaining cricket from both bat and ball as Beno and Spence scored 43 runs however crucially lost 2 wickets in doing so . Credit to some excellent bowling and fielding as only a brilliant catch at square leg and a beautiful yorker took the 2 wickets falling . Beno hit the ball crisply as he finished with 28 from just 16 balls hitting 6 fours ( nearly a six but not quite !! ) and Spence 8 from 5 balls with 2 powerful boundaries. A great game that could have gone either wayUnder 15’s
Barton Town 67 for 3 Lost to Broughton 71 for 3
Our first game of the season saw a tough start against a Broughton side containing some strong players with adult cricket experience, and whilst the night ended in defeat the performance was encouraging . After losing our Skipper Anneka to the quick opening bowler Johnstone , Oscar and Josh steadied the ship . After Oscar’s dismissal the experience of Josh and Jacob came together at the crease and a mixture of strong defence , good shot selection and aggressive running saw them put on 52 before Josh retired for a well made 31 not out hitting 4 boundaries on the way . Jacob soon followed for 20 as the innings came to a close . In reply a good opening knock from 2nd teamer M.Oades 28 not out set Broughton on the road to victory . We bowled and fielded very well all innings with Anneka taking 2 for 6 from her 3 overs whilst Will as always put it on the spot to take 1 for 11 as our visitors won with just over 2 over to spare .
Barton Town 57 for 7 Lost to Outcasts 88 for 5
Outcasts visited Marsh lane and came away victorious against an out of sorts home team . Good batting from Varley 28 not out and Whiteley 16 not out coupled with some poor fielding and too many extras saw us set 89 to win . Star of the bowling show was Syd who claimed 2 for 12 whilst Robert picked up 1 for 8. Run outs courtesy of Anneka and Will were encouraging as was a sharp slip catch by Beno . A total we should have fancied chasing down we unfortunately produced to many bad shots and little application at the crease seeing us fall well short. In contrast though Nathaniel stepped up to open the batting and produced a determined innings to bat through for 22 not out hitting 2 boundaries unfortunately he only found any support in the form of number 7 Will who scored 10 ( Well batted you 2 , some nice shots and good defence shown ) . So in the end a disappointing defeat but we have 2 games next week to put things right .
